Super Star Success Story

What Should I Do Next?

Dear Pam,

I’m a sales manager at a large advertising agency. I’ve been at my current job for more than 20 years but have recently been told that my position is being eliminated. They’ve offered me the option of taking a commissioned sales position or a severance package. If I take the sales position, I would pretty much be “starting over”. I’m thinking of taking the package and starting my own agency but I’m concerned about leaving the contacts that I have built over the past 20 years. Would it ok to try to take some of these accounts with me or would I be breaking some type of unspoken rule?

Signed, What Next

Dear What Next,

With so many companies down sizing, you situation is one that many people face on a daily basis. It sounds like if you take the sales position that you would also take a huge pay cut. Based on the information you’ve provided, I think that now may be a good time for you to “take the money and run”.

Since you would essentially be starting over anyway, why not “start over” with your own company and put your experience into getting it off the ground. As for the contacts that you have made, I would think that it would be acceptable to let them know that you will no longer be working with them because you are leaving to start your own firm.

At that point, if they want additional information then provide it to them. This takes the situation out of your hands and puts it in theirs. If they are interested in working with you, they will let you know.

Also, make sure that you don’t bad mouth the company you are leaving. This will allow you to leave on good terms without burning any bridges. I wish you success on your new endeavor!
